A FRIEND FOUND IN FRET
‘How beautiful a day is when friendship touches it’-
Rumi
I was thrilled to find myself admitted in a school
much larger than my expectations; both in expanse and strength. I
was elated and eager to join it soon. But much to my dismay, the first few
weeks were unvaried and unstimulating. The same monotony engulfed my days. I
would get up in the morning, dragged myself to catch the school bus, spent the
day deeply immersed in studies and sports, returned back home; lazily and worn
out. My parents would eagerly anticipate a fun filled day from me at the dinner
time but would soon be disappointed with my cold and unexcited answers. Unable
to judge my quandary, they would suggest me various means to make friendship. Sometimes,
they would make up funny stories just to please my dull attitude. I was
uninterested at those conjectures.
Days passed. I was as
uncomfortable as before; until one day, when she arrived.
The class teacher
introduced her to the entire class. She was plump and healthy with a round face
and dark curly hair. The next thing I realised was her seat next to mine.
She spoke less.
She sat silent. She was arrogant. She was weird.
My thoughts.
A month later.
I was busy struggling
with my science project and was unable to make the battery connect to the wind
turbine without which the entire project stood ineffectual. I was almost into
tears when someone from behind patted my left shoulder. I shrugged off without even
turning back. It seemed I forgot my basic manners learnt long ago at the kindergarten.
A soft and steady voice questioned, ‘Should I help you?’
Now, I regained my courtesy
back and turned back, only to find her standing behind me holding a conical flask in
one hand half filled with some dark reddish white fluid confirming a chemical reaction. It must be a part of her project which was some sort of
volcanic activities. I bothered not to ask her anything about her assignment as
my preconceived thoughts for this girl had already blurred my capacity to think anything about her. Also, I was overly occupied with my own scientific endeavours.
I gestured with my eyes. An
affirmation it was.
She rescued me.
And so, I found the best
friend of my life.
The friendship which I
treasured for the next innumerable number of years.
